Short for Storage over IP, SoIP technology refers
to the merging of Fibre Channel technologies with IP-based technology to allow
for accessing storage devices over TCP/IP networks. SoIP
is the framework for
storage area
networking (SAN) using Internet Protocol (IP) networks to directly connect
servers and storage. SoIP products are designed to support transparent
interoperability of storage devices based on Fibre Channel,
SCSI, and a new
class of Gigabit Ethernet storage devices using
iSCSI and iFCP. Existing Fibre
Channel or SCSI devices, such servers with host bus adapters (HBAs) or storage
subsystems, can be included in an SoIP storage network without modification.

This technology is being
standardized under the IP Storage (ips) IETF Working Group. Also referred to as SoIP Framework.

IP Storage (ips) There is significant interest in using IP-based networks to transport block storage traffic. This group will pursue the pragmatic approach of encapsulating existing protocols, such as SCSI and Fibre Channel, in an IP-based transport or transports. The group will focus on the transport or transports and related issues (e.g., security, naming, discovery, and configuration), as opposed to modifying existing protocols.
iSCSI, FCIP, iFCP ... and iFUD? In the early days of IP storage protocol development (all of three years ago), vested vendor interests spawned a protracted war between proponents of alternate IP-based solutions. Waged in the trade press, industry associations, and other venues, the contention between early variants of iSCSI, FCIP, iFCP, and other proposals sometimes generated a religious fervor, bordering on jihad.
